In the year ahead, the use of biometrics — an individual’s unique physical identifiers, such as fingerprints and faces — will be expanded at airports in the United States and abroad, a shift to enhance security, replace physical identification such as passports and driver’s licenses, and reduce the amount of time required by travelers to pass through airports. Biometric technology will be seen everywhere from bag drops at the check-in counters to domestic security screening. CHICAGO (AP) — A plane taxiing for departure clipped another aircraft at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on Sunday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday. No injuries were reported, both planes were of Boeing design, and the FAA says it will investigate the incident. The All Nippon Airways flight was a Boeing 777, and the Delta Airlines aircraft was a Boeing 717. Raymond Bongalon, a customer service representative with All Nippon Airways, said Monday afternoon that the airline could not yet provide any information on what happened. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Federal mediators have rejected a union's request that could have cleared the way for a year-end strike by flight attendants at American Airlines. The National Mediation Board instead directed the airline and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants to keep negotiating over a new contract. “We look forward to continued negotiations with APFA and reaching an agreement our flight attendants have earned,” American said in a statement Tuesday. The airline says its proposal to pay flight attendants during boarding would make the 11% raise more like 18%. American, which is based in Fort Worth, Texas, is proposing to match Delta’s decision last year to pay flight attendants during boarding.

Planes packed with summer travelers boosted Delta Air Lines to a $1.11 billion profit in the third quarter, and the carrier said Thursday that it expects revenue to keep rising into the holiday season. Profit was up 59% from a year earlier, as strong ticket sales — especially for premium seats and international flights — helped Delta shrug off higher labor costs. “I think we’re closing the year strong, and the holiday bookings that we see right now are pretty good,” CEO Ed Bastian said in an interview. The last time a major airline was grounded by a strike was 25 years ago when Northwest Airlines pilots went on strike for two weeks. But most negotiations are settled, even after a strike vote, without a work stoppage.

U.S. aviation-safety officials are investigating how two planes came close to a collision on a runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday night. Delta Air Lines Inc. Flight 1943 was headed down the runway for takeoff when air-traffic controllers noticed another plane crossing in the departing jetliner’s path, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said Saturday. Delta’s Boeing Co. 737 came to a stop about 1,000 feet before reaching the point where a Boeing 777 operated by American Airlines Group Inc. was crossing, according to the FAA’s preliminary analysis.

New York CNN —Delta Air Lines has a backup to the federal aviation safety system that failed this week, but the airline decided against using it, CEO Ed Bastian said Friday. Bastian described the Delta’s secondary system as “fairly old backup technology” involving the notices known as NOTAMs distributed by the Federal Aviation Administration alerting pilots of obstacles, closures, and other information. Delta’s backup system collects data from the NOTAM database. But a new labor deal with its pilots union will trim profitability going forward. The main headwind: a new tentative labor agreement with its pilots union, reached a month ago, that will increase pay by 34% over the life of the contract.
